Dark Horse Esports, an organization dedicated to helping individuals with developmental challenges reach a professional level in competitive gaming.
Dark Horse was founded in 2025 by Sataria Carter, a lifelong gamer and advocate with nearly 20 years of experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
With a passion for both gaming and empowering people, Sataria set out to create an organization that would break barriers and expand opportunities in the world of e-sports.
She recognized that while people with disabilities bring tremendous skill, focus, and creativity to gaming, they have been historically underrepresented in the professional e-sports arena. A dark horse is a previously lesser -known person, team or thing that emerges to prominence in a situation especially in a completion, that is unlikely to succeed but has a fighting chance.
Dark Horse was created to change that narrative by providing a competitive platform where players with intellectual and developmental disabilities can showcase their talents, pursue their passions, and inspire a more inclusive professional gaming industry.
Team Lead
Sataria Carter, Founder, of Dark Horse, is known for her compassion and lifelong dedication to serving others. At just 16 years old, she became the youngest person in the State of Indiana approved to provide direct care services, beginning a career path that has spanned nearly two decades of advocacy and employment opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Throughout her career, she has worked one-on-one with families, served as an advocate, and built programs that empower individuals to thrive. In doing so, she has established herself as a trusted leader in the disability community.
Alongside her professional work, Sataria has been a passionate gamer since 1993, when she first picked up the Nintendo Entertainment System and played classics like Duck Hunt, Donkey Kong, and Super Mario. Over the years, her love for gaming grew from Sega favorites to competitive titles like Madden, Overwatch, and Call of Duty. Inspired by pro players such as Nickmercs, Faze Clan, and Tyler1, she became especially drawn to the world of e-sports when Overwatch and the Overwatch League launched. Even while balancing school and career, her passion for gaming never faded, and today she is channeling that passion into creating an inclusive e-sports organization that champions opportunity for people with disabilities. Through her leadership, Dark Horse embodies inclusion, opportunity, and the incredible talents of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Dark Horse Social Media Manager
My name is Nia, I’m 25 years old, and gaming has been a part of my life for over 20 years. I grew up on everything from the Wii to PlayStation, and eventually found my home on PC. I started seriously gaming and streaming in 2017 with Fortnite, and what started as a love for the game quickly turned into something so much deeper—a way to connect, build relationships, and be part of a larger community.
Gaming has given me a support system I never imagined I could have. It’s been a space for healing, joy, and self-expression—a place where I could be fully myself and meet others who understood me, no matter the distance. That’s why Dark Horse means so much to me. It’s more than just an esports org—it’s a mission. A mission to uplift, represent, and create a safe, competitive space for people with disabilities and special needs.
My goal with Dark Horse is to help make gaming more inclusive, more accessible, and more human. I want to show others—especially those who feel overlooked or underestimated—that they belong here, too.
